National Unity day
Also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated every year on 31st of October by the people all through India. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who really unified the country. National Unity Day was introduced by the Government of India in 2014 with the aim of celebrating this event every year on 31st October. It would be celebrated as the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The aim of introducing this event is to pay tribute to the great man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth anniversary by remembering his extraordinary works for the country. He really worked hard in keeping India united.

This year, National Unity Day has a special significance, as it marks the completion of the task of making Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh an integral part of India by abrogating Article 370. This truly represents the dream of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel of an integrated India.
In our School
Students of KiiT International School spoke about the great freedom fighter as one of the tallest leaders of independent India during the school assembly on 31st of October 2019 as part of the National Unity Day observation. They pledged to uphold the unity and integrity of the motherland. It was a beautiful tribute to the great Sardar Vallabhai Patel and to this great country, India.

Why do we celebrate National Unity DayNational Unity Day is the birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a famous personality for uniting India. This day was decided and introduced by the central government of India in New Delhi in 2014 in order to observe the birth anniversary of Patel every year as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. It aimed to pay tribute to him for his great efforts made to unite India.
Celebration of this occasion annually helps youth of the country to be aware of and provides an opportunity to everyone to maintain the integral strength of the nation. It makes Indian citizens to realize that how a national integrity helps in defeating the actual and potential threats for unity, integrity and security of the nation. |
About Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
The Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31st of October in 1875 at Karamsand, Gujarat. As being the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India he played a most important role in the integration of many Indian princely states to make an Indian federation. He made huge efforts to restore the peace all across the nation.
Patel was deeply inspired by the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1931 he was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress. Patel joined Non-Cooperation Movement started by Gandhi and recruit 3, 00,000 members and Rs 1.5 million for party fund during his travel to West India. Patel was a great social reformer who worked extensively against alcohol consumption, untouchability, caste discrimination and for women emancipation in Gujarat and outside. He unified India as none other. When Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned, he led the Satyagraha movement in Nagpur in 1923 against the British law of banning the hoisting of the Indian Flag. He died on Friday 15 December, 1950 at Birla House in Bombay but his memories are still alive in our heart. |

- In Godhra, he set up an independent office of district pleader in 1900.
- In August 1910, he went to London for further studies.
- In 1913, he returned to India and settled in Ahmadabad and became a barrister in criminal law at the Ahmadabad bar.
- He served as the first Indian municipal commissioner of Ahmadabad from 1917 to 1924 and was elected as a municipal president from 1924 to 1928.
- In 1918 he made his first mark by a mass campaign of peasants, farmers, and landowners of Kaira, Gujarat, against the decision of the Bombay government. Despite crop failures due to heavy rains, the government wanted to collect full annual taxes.
- In 1928, he successfully led the Bardoli campaign and earned the title Sardar that is "leader".
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the second candidate after Mahatma Gandhi to the presidency of the 1929 Lahore session of the Indian National Congress.
- In 1931, he presided the Karachi session of the Indian National Congress.
- He was the first chairman and founder of the Edward Memorial High School Borsad (E.M.H.S) now, it is known as Jhaverbhai Dajibhai Patel High School.
- He always worked hard to make India a United India (Ek Bharat). To create Shreshth Bharat or Foremost India, he requested people of India to live together. Being the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, he played an important role in the integration of many Indian princely states to make an Indian federation.
